Statements from the Awami League and India Regarding the Formation of an Expatriate Government

The Awami League is rumored to be organizing a rally and announcing an expatriate government in Agartala, the capital of India’s Tripura state, according to social media reports. Coordinators from the anti-discrimination student movement have claimed that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina may attend and speak at the rally.

However, central leaders of the Awami League have denied these claims, stating there is no basis for the rumors about the rally, the expatriate government, or Sheikh Hasina’s participation. The Indian government has also indicated that these claims are unfounded, and no officials from the interim government have commented on the situation.

Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim dismissed the rumors as baseless, false, and part of a propaganda effort to obscure failures, insisting that the interim government must take responsibility for its shortcomings.

Leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement alleged that local Awami leaders from Comilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, and Feni, who remain in the country, are behind the attempt to organize the rally.

In response to the alleged Awami League activities in Tripura, the anti-discrimination student movement announced their intent to resist. A torch rally was held on Saturday night around 8:30 PM from the Town Hall grounds in Comilla, led by central coordinators Hasnat Abdullah and Abdul Hannan Masud.

Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid a student uprising and has been in India since, though her duration of stay is uncertain, with rumors circulating about her potential relocation to another country.

Additionally, during the anti-discrimination student movement, the International Crimes Tribunal has issued an arrest warrant for Sheikh Hasina in connection with the genocide case from July-August, requiring her to appear before the tribunal by November 18.
